Discover Buffalo

Home of Longmire

Buffalo, home to the Walt Longmire series, is tucked away between the rolling plains of the Old West and the towering peaks of the Bighorn Mountains. The charming town is conveniently located at the intersections of Interstates 25 and 90; Wyoming State Highway 16, on its way from Mount Rushmore to Yellowstone National Park, runs through Buffalo.

Whether it’s beautiful scenery, wide open spaces, outdoor recreation or getting a sense of our history through two great museums, Buffalo and its surrounding communities are places you’ll love to visit. You’ll enjoy the Western hospitality of restaurants from family fare to fine dining, in addition to shops and art galleries, plus a selection of hotels, motels, campgrounds, guest ranches and mountain lodges.

Buffalo's main street has more than a dozen historic buildings, including the Occidental Hotel, where Owen Wister's Virginian finally "got his man." The impressive Jim Gatchell Museum has over 15,000 artifacts from the American Old West.  Many other Wyoming historical sites are just a short drive from Buffalo including Fort Phil Kearney, Fetterman's Massacre Site, Wagon Box Fight and the infamous "Hole in the Wall" — the hideout of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid along with the rest of the "Wild Bunch."

The Bighorn Mountains provide a number of activities in the summer and winter. Enjoy the Cloud Peak Scenic Byway on your way to fishing, hiking and camping. Winter activities include snowshoeing, cross country skiing, downhill skiing and snowmobiling. You’ll find a free public pool in the city park in the summer and a four-star golf course in the heart of town.
