SMH, VA prepare against COVID-19

SHERIDAN — Wyoming’s first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Sheridan Wednesday, and organizations across the county have implemented precautionary measures in an attempt to avoid transmission.

Sheridan Memorial Hospital Marketing Manager Alan Dubberley said Thursday afternoon the affected patient is quarantined at home and doing well.

With widespread cancellations of public events, SMH Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Addlesperger said it remains important for all community members to follow recommendations for infection prevention.

There is no existing treatment for COVID-19, but Addlesperger said each community holds the power to “flatten the curve” of the pandemic. Spreading the disease via public contact will likely lead to a spike of serious cases and overburdening on the health care system, he said. Staying home allows it to spread more slowly and controllably.

Addlesperger downplayed a cause for panic but urged community members to take their role in preventing the spread of the disease seriously. SMH closed the campus cafeteria and Sidewalk Cafe to the public until further notice.

Addlesperger said 80% of people who contract the virus will exhibit only minor symptoms. Post-infection lung damage is a long-term concern but it will take time to see how people who suffered a serious infection respond, he said.
