Discussing alternative teaching options

School districts 1, 3

SHERIDAN — Sheridan County school districts 1 and 3 held special meetings Wednesday.

SCSD1, currently on spring break, operated its meeting via Zoom at noon.

Superintendent Pete Kilbride addressed the issue of spring break travelers increasing the spread of COVID-19. Kilbride said it is “uncomfortable,” and he wants people to stay home to see if they show symptoms.

“We will allow schools to be open so staff can get supplies, computers, etc., but I want people to work by themselves,” Kilbride said. “Custodial crews will clean as if the schools were occupied and wipe high-touch areas, such as copiers.”

Principals will work with staff via Zoom for educational planning with the goal to begin instruction April 6. The district has online academic accounts for each student in the district that can be used for virtual teaching; Kilbride said it’s a matter of training teachers how to use that technology.

While there are not enough devices for each student in grades K-3, grades 4-12 have enough devices to accomplish a 1:1 ratio.
