State champions: You might have one in your backyard

State Champion Trees

SHERIDAN — Sheridan County houses more than one-fifth of all state champions in Wyoming.

State champion trees, that is.

Currently, Sheridan County has state champions in 12 of the 50 listed species in the 2020 Wyoming Champion Tree Register.

This includes the Green Ash, Boxelder, Ohio Buckeye, Eastern Cottonwood, common Crabapple, Honeylocust, American Linden, Black Locust, Rocky Mountain Maple, Norway Maple, Silver Maple and Scotch Pine.

The Wyoming Champion Tree program, part of the Wyoming State Forestry Division and directed by Cooperative Resource Forester Nina Wajrowski, aims to recognize the largest living native and commonly introduced trees in Wyoming.
