Column: What will you discover in our beautiful Bighorns backyard?

By Chris Vrba

As we near the end of July and head into August, I’m pondering what more I can discover this summer. After all, the days remaining to get up the mountain for a bit of Mother Nature’s air conditioning before she turns it into a deep freeze are waning and there’s more than a million acres of Bighorns begging to be explored just outside our community’s backdoor.

For me, that’s the thrill of a trout tugging at the end of my line or the breathless exclamation of wonder when my eyes first glimpse a place like Lake Geneva. This summer, my discoveries have been that my fly game’s getting better, albeit gradually and that with a few huffs and a few puffs — a few hundred, really — Long Lake is a barren spectacular that must be experienced to be understood.

Discovery is the name of game in a “WYld” place like Sheridan County, and in that spirit, Sheridan Community Land Trust created Discovery Sessions. The Discovery Sessions are a series of outdoor-inspired workshops and activities that aim to inspire, teach and connect community members young and old to nature.
