Discover Clearmont

Small but spectacular

Population: 144 (2012 projection)
Elevation: 3,917 ft.

Some of the best open landscapes lie in the eastern part of Sheridan County, where hay bales dot freshly cut fields on the way to Clearmont.

As the smallest incorporated town in the county, the 150 people living within its bounds have learned how to survive harsh winters and the longer distances to the amenities in a bigger city. Even with limited offerings, Clearmont remains active with a kindergarten through 12th grade school and sports teams. Volunteers keep the library and Clear Creek Recreation District running smoothly for folks coming into town for an activity or get-together.

Beyond downtown, Ucross rests in the plains area with offerings for art enthusiasts and dude ranch residents alike. Public access hunting grounds are plentiful, with many opportunities to bag large game. A particular event for The Ranch at Ucross brings in women from around the U.S. to learn the livelihood of hunting from start to finish. The Ucross Foundation, also brings artists of all types and from all over to find solitude and inspiration in the beauty of Wyoming.

HISTORY

In 1890, the Pratt & Ferris Cattle Company controlled the valley where the town of Clearmont is located. By September 28, 1892, the original town of Clearmont was platted and filed with the county. The post office was established in 1892. Clearmont is said to have derived its name from the Clear Creek that flows nearby and the view of the Bighorn Mountains in the distance. In the early 1900’s, Clearmont was a major shipping point for cattle and became a terminal point in 1914.
